Things You Should Know When Sourcing & Using Handmade Beaded Lace and Tulle

Haute couture fashion is defined by the unique textiles used to create eye-catching looks. It is no secret that the most exclusive and sophisticated textiles are made by hand, because nothing replaces a personal touch.

Handmade beaded lace is the most delicate and refined type of fabric there is, and making it is much like creating a piece of art.

When the idea forms in the textile designer's mind, it first becomes a sketch. Then begins the process of finding the perfect combination of materials, such as beads, crystal stones, pearls, sequins, fringes, or flowers. Choosing colors that create harmony is, of course, one of the most important parts of this process.

Once the idea is fully expressed, it is time to produce the perfect swatch, and only then can the fabric itself be made. Because the fabric is produced entirely by hand, the work is far more delicate and time-consuming than it is for any other type of couture fabric.

Despite how long it takes to make, beaded lace is one of the most widely used fabrics in the haute couture world, because it can elevate even the simplest dress. The most famous fashion and haute couture houses use beaded laces to create exclusive designs that stand out. They know that every woman dreams of a shimmering evening gown that sits on her like a piece of fine jewelry.

How To Look After Beaded Laces

As a luxury fabric, it should be treated like any other expensive item you own—gently. The right way to clean this type of fabric is by dry-cleaning. In some cases it can be washed by hand, but make sure to handle the garment gently and avoid any agitation. You can fill a bathtub or a large sink with cold water and use a small amount of mild soap. Hand-washing is not suitable for every kind of beaded lace or fabric, so always test it on a small swatch and/or consult the supplier about your specific fabric.

Tips for Making a Garment with Beaded Lace

Sewing with beaded lace calls for more delicate work, but it is well worth it, because you will create a luxury garment that stands out. Before starting a project, it is important to decide how you are going to sew the beaded lace.

One option is to sew it by machine. For that, you first have to remove the beads and any other hard materials from your seam allowances before you stitch the fabric pieces together. You want a clean seam area along each edge. This gives the finished garment a professional finish and is far gentler on your sewing machine.

The materials along the seam allowances can be removed by hand, or you can use a hammer to gently break the beads along the seam allowances. Either way, you will then be able to sew the fabric by machine—although you should still work slowly and carefully to make sure your needle does not break.

Avoid sewing directly over the beads or other materials. Doing so makes the finished seam bulky, stops it from lying flat, and makes the garment uncomfortable to wear—and it is also how machine needles get broken.

Another approach to sewing beaded lace or tulle is to sew all the parts together by hand. It takes longer, but slip-stitching the seam allowance down gives you smooth, flat seams and a more comfortable, longer-lasting fit.

Important tip: Although beaded lace can be ironed (using the proper techniques), it is best not to iron it repeatedly. Instead, use a slip stitch to hold the seam allowance layers flat and pointing in the direction you want. It takes more time than pressing, but it keeps the seams smooth and flat and the garment comfortable for years to come.
